Tampa Bay Selected To Host 2012 GOP Convention

Members of the Republican National Committee unanimously selected Tampa Bay to host the 2012 Republican Convention, a week-long event expected to attract over 50,000 party delegates, politicians, protesters and news media to the Bay area.  The convention will take place the week of Aug. 27, 2012, at multiple venues including the St. Pete Times Forum, Tampa Convention Center and Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.

The city lost its 2004 bid to New York, and in 2008 lost its bid to Minneapolis. Hillsborough County Commissioner Ken Hagan, a member of the host committee who was also involved in the unsuccessful bids, called the convention a “historic day for Tampa Bay” and “the single largest non-sporting event we have ever hosted”. The last time the event was held in Florida was 1972, when both Republican and Democratic conventions were held in Miami. The event will be a big boost to the local economy, providing jobs and filling hotel rooms and restaurants.
